Newton Shield Champions 2024
The Newton Shield 2024 final was played in an exemplary sporting manner with many spectators enjoying the superb standard of golf on show. It was great to see many representatives of other clubs out watching the final. Paisley GC were first class hosts and the course was in excellent condition and they even arranged the superb weather. Although Kilmacolm put up a spirited fight, Paisley were the worthy winners. Thanks to Captain of Captains Gordon McKinley for being an excellent host and also to the Paisley Greens and House teams for all their hard work. A new tradition was born for the final when Past Captain of Paisley, Ian Walker, was asked to perform the roll of starter which he executed to perfection. We will ask Greenock in 2025 to nominate a Past Captain to do the same. All in all, a great Newton Shield campaign played in the best manner. Thanks also to the Executive Committee for all your help and support.
A particular moment to mention was witnessed at the par 5 12th hole. Alexander Farmer reached the green with a drive and 6 iron stopping 20ft short of the hole. His opponent, Graeme Cross, had a flyer with his second shot and his ball landed in waist high rough on the other side of the wall at the back of the green. He had a swing at it and immediately called “get down” as it came out better than expected. The ball “slam dunked” straight into the hole for an eagle 3! Alexander displayed great concentration and skill by holing his putt for an eagle and a half!
